Thanks for the replies. I didn't want to come back too early before I got a reasonable number and could see if there was a 'consensus' and I think there might be. The watch was a gift from my late brother and it is a Junghans Mega Solar Radio Controlled Watch. Basically it has stopped synchronising with the time signal transmitted from Germany. After examination by the Junghans people here in the UK I am told that because of the fault the whole watch 'unit' needs replacing. The only parts not being replaced are of course, the casing, hands and solar cell but because of this the cost is equivalent to a new watch.

Hence my enquiry and my contention that I should have expected a longer life out of such a time piece. Thanks for the replies.

Intel Indeo R5.1 Codec. Even more reason to try to have it repaired. Stupid question, but can't you just run it a a normal quartz watch, and set the time yourself.

For that kind of money I'd expect it to keep time without needing to be synchronized. Next suggestion, go to the top of a high building with a clear site of the transmitter in Germany and see if you have any more success. My next suggestion was going to be to check the battery contacts, but looking at a manual online () I wonder if it's just discharged, and needs to sit under a lamp for a few days.

And yes I know Junghams would like you to think otherwise, but a full battery might make the reciever work better. Watch repairers are becoming a rarity these days as I found when taking a watch in for repair to a jewellers. They said the old chap who did repairs had retired. I don't know if this is something that is dying out. There are still watchmakers around, although you might have to travel a bit to find one in your region. If the watch is valuable, make sure it's a properly trained watchmaker.
